Yesterday I argued a case on appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th judicial circuit.
By the miracle of modern technology, myself, and the attorney representing the United States, did not have to travel to Richmond, Virginia, the seat of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, but rather I simply walked 15 minutes from my office to the federal courthouse here in Baltimore, where a room was set-up with a monitor and a camera, and the case was argued via closed-circuit tv to 3 federal appellate judges who were located in Richmond. The issue in the case was whether my client was entitled to a new sentencing based on the government's breach of the plea agreement in her case. The only thing left left to do now is to await the opinion of the 3-judge panel. But if nothing else, it certainly was far more convenient to argue the case from Baltimore as opposed to traveling to Richmond to make a 20-minute oral argument. |
