While most of the attention in the legal community lately has been on the Mayor Dixon trial, I just completed a murder trial in the same courthouse that her Honor was tried in, with a verdict of not guilty being returned in my case late yesterday afternoon.
My client was charged with the shooting death of an individual in Baltimore City, which occurred back in July 2008 The State's case hinged on the eyewitness testimony of 1 witness, who claimed he was present when the shooting took place, and that it was my client who did the shooting. Despite this eyewitness account, I was able to persuade the jury the version of the incident related by the State's witness was unreliable, based on inconsistencies in the statement the eyewitness provided to the police shortly after the shooting. When all was said and done, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty on all counts. Had my client been convicted of 1st-degree murder, as well as using a handgun in commission of the murder, he would have likely been sentenced to life, plus 20 years. By the way, for those of you keeping score at home, my last four homicide, or attempted homicide, jury trials have all resulted in not guilty verdicts. |
