Probation Sentence in Federal Wire Fraud Case

I just concluded representation of a client charged in Federal Court with wire fraud, which carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison.  Essentially, federal jurisdiction occurred because the case involved bogus checks being passed to various retail merchants, who utilized, by electronic means, a check verification service located outside the state of Maryland.  In any event, at sentencing, I was able to point out to the court my client's lack of prior criminal record, her minor role in the scheme, in comparison to other defendant's in the case, and other relevant factors, such as her disadvantaged upbringing as well as the fact that she has been steadily employed for almost the last 3 years.  After hearing my presentation, the court sentenced my client to a term of probation, rather than imprisonment.
